The Tracker is a small operation with a strict rule: every number on it traces back to a document a reader can open. This page explains where the documents come from, how we read them, and where a human stands between the machine and the page.

Where the data comes from
State labor departments, first.
The WARN Act requires many employers to notify a state agency before a mass layoff or plant closing. Those notices are the backbone of the Tracker, and we take them from each state's own published record rather than from a press release.
Five of those states run through warn-scraper, the Apache-2.0 project maintained by Big Local News at the Stanford Computational Journalism Lab, which reads the same state pages we would. Minnesota, Pennsylvania and North Carolina have hand-written parsers, because that project does not cover them. Where an aggregator sits in the path, we say so here rather than claim there is never one.

What a filing is not
A WARN notice is a legal form, not a diagnosis.
A WARN filing tells you that a set number of jobs is ending at a named place on a named date. It does not say why. It does not, by itself, indicate AI-driven displacement — and anyone charting WARN counts as an AI-job-loss series is telling you something the document does not contain.
Attribution tiers
We grade the explanation, not the cause.
When a layoff event is assembled from one or more filings, we search SEC full-text filings — 8-Ks, 10-Qs, and their exhibits — for the employer's own account of the reduction. The test is proximity: does the company's AI or automation language sit inside the same passage as its reduction language? The matching is rule-based and auditable. We never ask a language model to decide a tier.
AI-Direct
The employer explicitly ties the reduction to AI or automation.
AI-Adjacent
AI or automation appears in the same explanation, alongside other stated causes.
Business Cycle
The employer cites demand, restructuring, cost, or closure, with no AI language.
Mixed
Multiple filings for the same event explain it differently.
Unknown
No stated reason we can source to a document.
Tiers describe how the employer explained itself, not our judgement of what really happened.

WARN notices, answered.
How many days' notice does the WARN Act require?
The federal WARN Act requires 60 days' written notice before a covered plant closing or mass layoff. It applies to employers with 100 or more full-time workers, when 50 or more people at one site lose their jobs in a closing, or when a layoff reaches 500 workers (or 50 to 499 if that is at least a third of the site).
Does the WARN Act apply to remote workers?
Often, yes. Remote employees are usually counted at the site they report to or are managed from, so they can be part of a covered layoff there. Whether a specific remote role counts is a fact question worth putting to an employment attorney.
Which states have their own WARN laws?
Several states add their own notice law on top of the federal act, sometimes with lower thresholds or longer notice periods. We don't yet publish a sourced state-by-state summary; each state page shows the federal rule and links to that state's own published record.
How do I check whether my employer filed a WARN notice?
Search the employer in the WARN ledger, or open your state's page from the coverage table. Each filing links back to the state's own record. Our coverage is a partial view, so if you don't find it here, check your state labor department directly.
Where does PinkSlipped get its layoff data?
WARN filings come from each state's own published record, some through the open-source warn-scraper project and some through our own parsers. Layoff events add company filings, reporting and public trackers, and every event is read by a person before it publishes.
Human review
Nothing publishes on its own.
The ingest proposes; it never publishes. Every event and every quarantined filing sits in a review queue until a person reads the evidence, keeps or overrides the proposed tier, and signs off. An event with no sourced evidence cannot be published at all — that rule is enforced in the database, not just in the interface.
Corrections
When we're wrong, we say so.
Errors are logged in public with what we published, what is correct, and the date we fixed it. Nothing is quietly edited away.
