HubSpot cuts nearly 660 jobs, and its CEO tells staff the cuts are not driven by AI-related efficiencies

Oct 6, 2026 · Cambridge, MA + global

PinkSlipped's Read

HubSpot's CEO memo, furnished to the SEC with an 8-K on Oct 6, has two lines about AI that pull in different directions. The cuts are "not driven by AI-related efficiencies." And over the past year the company "shifted our strategy from building software that helps customers grow to delivering outcomes for them with AI," a shift the memo says means changing how the company is organized. The first says AI efficiency is not the reason for the cuts. The second puts AI at the center of why the company is reorganizing.

Both can be true, and the space between them is the story. Layoff counts sort cuts by the reason an employer gives, and a memo that names AI as the strategy while ruling it out as the cause does not sort cleanly. In Challenger, Gray & Christmas's July report, Andy Challenger said: "As regulations start to take shape, companies will be even more careful in their announcements, which would make tracking the impact of AI on jobs more opaque." That is why we read the memo, not just the count.

WARN notices

The filings, as the states published them.

WARN Act notices are legal records employers file with state labor departments before a mass layoff or closure. Each row links to its source: the state's own record where we have it, otherwise the report we took it from, labeled as such. A WARN filing does not, by itself, indicate AI-driven displacement.

Data & methodology

Where this comes from, and how we read it.

Cut totals and cause attribution come from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, cited to the month of publication. WARN filings come from each state's own published WARN records, read by Big Local News' open-source warn-scraper where it covers a state and by parsers we wrote where it doesn't. The coverage table on the ledger shows which states are flowing today. Occupational exposure research is cited individually and never blended.

We are currently ingesting from 29 states, with 13 more configured and not yet returning filings.

A WARN filing does not, by itself, indicate AI-driven displacement. Every stat carries the period it describes, errors are corrected in place and logged, and nothing publishes without a person reading the evidence first.
